Dear Laurie,
Does anyone know the cause to a fibroma?
Heel spurs develop as an abnormal growth in the heel bone due to calcium deposits that form when the plantar scia pulls away from the heel. This stretching of the plantar scia is usually the result of over-pronation (flat feet), but people with unusually high arches (pes cavus) can also develop heel spurs. Women have a significantly higher incidence of heel spurs due to the types of footwear often worn on a regular basis.
Hi; I have the exact same thing on my left foot. It seems attached to the tendon. It is not painfull. I read in a book once that you need to massage out lumps in the foot, it can take a long time. I had one in the center of the sole once & it went away, Randy
The point being, it doesnt have to affect your lifestyle.
Hi, Im no Doctor just a person who have had the same problem. Below is some information in which I believe might be your problem which is called Heel Spur or Bone Spur. Only thing I can suggest to you is to see a podiatrist and get acortisoneshot (steroids). Also, go to a store and purchase and take some good calsium pills daily. (You will notice a great difference and feel so much better!

Posted byjessica son 9/17/02I first noticed a small lump (quite hard) on the large tendon on the bottom of my left foot about 7 months ago. It is now about the size of a time. It is not on the skin suce, it seems to be attached to the tendon??? I showed it to my mily Dr. last week and he suggested I see foot dr. I am really scared that it is some kind of cancerous tumor. Why else would my reg. doc want me to go to specialist? Its not painful, only if I press really hard on it. Any ideas as to what else this could be? My appt. with foot Dr. isnt until Oct. 16. Thanks in advance.

The heel bone is the largest bone in the foot and absorbs the most amount of shock and pressure. A heel spur develops as an abnormal growth of the heel bone. Calcium deposits form when the plantar scia pulls away from the heel area, causing a bony protrusion, or heel spur to develop. The plantar scia is a broad band of fibrous tissue located along the bottom suce of the foot that runs from the heel to the forefoot. Heel spurs can cause extreme pain in the rearfoot, especially while standing or walking.
Hi Jessica , your are very welcome , I have no idea where the doctors are . I am sure they will come along and answer your question soon . The reason I answered your question is , it caught my eye , and I have the same thing ..... I have a great suggestion for you ..... At the top of the page Scott the web master of this site has put together a wonderful pain book you can read ..... Just click on it . Their is so much info in it . Plus I think it may answer some of your questions ....
You could have a genetic disorder of people with Nordic/Scandinavian heritage, such as Dupuytrens .

The slipping on of a tensor type ankle brace works too keep the tendon from tightening up. I used the tensor at first then didnt need them as the orthotics put my foot back into proper alignment.

Hi again Jessica , Yes my lump pretty much hurt from the start , I dont need to touch it to make it hurt . At one point it was getting so very painful I even asked my doctor to do another surgery to cut it out . He said no way of course ...... My scar tissue came from having PF .... Then I had surgery . But I had PF for three years before I had the surgery ..Do you have any other foot problems or just the lump ?

From what you have said in your post , it sounds like to me that you have a fibroma . I have one also in the same place as you do . I had surgery on May 7 th and my doctor cut it out .... Then as I was healing I got another one in the same spot..... It is right on my scia ..... Mine was hurting so bad .... I went to PT for it 4 times a week ..... They would get in there and try to brake up the lump , it did not help at all ....

If so, it is nothing to worry about. You may eventually need an operation if it travels to your hands or pains your feet too much. Otherwise, you might have no side effects throughout your life.

Plantar fibromatosis is a common scenario consistent with the type of growth you describe. If that is confirmed, then the lesions can be significantly reduced in size via injections of hyaluronidase, triamcinolone acetonide and a local anesthetic.
If so, it is nothing to worry about. You may eventually need an operation if it travels to your hands or pains your feet too much. Otherwise, you might have no side effects throughout your life.
yea, im 15 years old and ive had a bump on both my feet for a very long time. I dont remember the first time ive noticed it but ive just ignored it until the past year or so when it started to really hurt. And this year i am starting to play sports and both my feet feel like im pulling a muscle on the bottom and theres this huge bump on the side bottom of my feet. I have read everyones replys and they all seem to talk about one of there feet. I have it on both and i am wondering if i should get surgery, because as i read its 50/50% chance it will work? please help
when I touch it. He talked about serg. but wanted me to try insoles frist, and come back in two weeks. So I did. I went back 2-14-08 and when he checked it he found another one.
About 8 years ago, I saw a Podiatrists and he measured it. Smaller than a dime. It has grown to be about 3 inches long and 1.5 wide. a week or so ago, I noticed the same type of growth under my big toe on the same foot. I am seeing a new podiatrist Monday.

Hi I also had a plantorfibroma tumor removed from the bottom of my foot too. It was in the ball of my foot. I really got very hard to walk on it sence I walk on concert for 12 hours a day 3 days a week at work. It got to the point that I couldt take the pain from walking on it any more so I had a foot doctor remove it. But in the healing time another just came back in it place. The bottom of my hole foot just fells like a bunch of small bees are stinging me and some pain shooting through my entire foot again......Just like the first time.
I also have a lump on the tendon on the bottom of my right foot.
Jennifer
Good luck. If it is dypuytrens, then it is only a genetic quirk.
I have about 3 on each foot- they only hurt when I press on them, or when I step on some sort raised flooring where it can fit inbetween my toes and heel. Like the bottom of a door frame. So from reading all this- it appears that shots are the best method? I do not like the idea of having a surgery and it coming right back.
Does anyone know the cause to a fibroma?

Hi...well as r as other foot problems, for the last 1 1/2 years, my feet hurt when I get up in the morning. Very hard to walk, have to hold on from furniture to furniture. It feels like the big tendon going up the back of my ankle has shrunk???and my heels hurt. After a few minutes they feel ok until I sit for awhile then get up and walk again...then it starts all over. I thought it had something to do with being a waitress for 2 years prior. I dont know if this problem has a name or if it has anything to do with this lump. Any ideas? Thanks again. p.s. why arent any Dr.s answering my question also? (I appreciate you taking the time to answer me Laurie)

Other common treatments include stretching exercises, losing weight, wearing shoes that have a cushioned heel that absorbs shock, and elevating the heel with the use of a heel cradle, heel cup, or orthotic. Heel cradles and heel cups provide extra comfort and cushion to the heel, and reduce the amount of shock and shear forces experienced from everyday activities.

He told me that he went to a dr.s convention in Chicago, and they were talking about a cream called (Transdermal Verapamil 15% Gel). We talked some more and I decided to try this frist. I know this may take awhile to work, but, my dr. said that the man that was talking about this cream said that it was 75% careable. Where my dr. said that serg. was 50/50.

When the growth was removed previously, what did they determine that it was. Typically such growths are sent to pathology (excisional biopsy).

The key for the proper treatment of heel spurs is determining what is causing the excessive stretching of the plantar scia. When the cause is over-pronation (flat feet), anorthoticwith rearfoot posting and longitudinal arch support is an effective device to reduce the over-pronation, and allow the condition to heal.
Best wishes.
Did you ever fine out what the issue was?
Dont believe only mily names in your heritage. You could be nordic and not know it. Even Europe is not made of pure lineages.
I wish you the best ...... Let me know if I can help . I hope one of the wonderful doctor will come and read your post and help you ...
AAWWWW! Thank you Laurie. Maybe one of them will answer.
Best wishes.
I did not see what the doctor said regarding the lump in your foot that felt like a blister. Could you please tell what they said?
Other common treatments include stretching exercises, losing weight, wearing shoes that have a cushioned heel that absorbs shock, and elevating the heel with the use of a heel cradle, heel cup, or orthotic. Heel cradles and heel cups provide extra comfort and cushion to the heel, and reduce the amount of shock and shear forces experienced from everyday activities.

Good luck. If it is dypuytrens, then it is only a genetic quirk.

I am researching the bump on my tendon in the arch of my foot. I am curious as to what your POD said, if you dont mind. Im not much for going to the DR.
Thank you,
Let me know if I can help you anymore at all.....
If so, it is nothing to worry about. You may eventually need an operation if it travels to your hands or pains your feet too much. Otherwise, you might have no side effects throughout your life.
In my mily, it comes from the Irish side of the mily. We are from the part of Ireland where the Vikings invaded, SW Ireland, Cork/Kerry Counties.

Hi there Jessica,
I was just diagnosed with tendon fibromyoma of the major foot tendon as well....boy this is not fun! I am about 70 lbs over weight and keep thinking it came on because of that. What do you think? Also, did thecortisoneshot hurt???
Genetics wont lie like birth certificates and emigration documents and esp. mily oral histories might.
The orthotic slips in any shoe and u wont leave home with out them. If doesnt cure it, but the pain is 95% gone.
Cause
Cancer is very very rare of the foot.. It sounds like a fibroma . This is a mass attached to the plantar scia . Usually no treatment is needed. See a podiatrist he will confirme this and allay your fears
It is obvious from our looks - and now the prevalence of Dupuytrens in our mily - that we have Nordic roots.

Hello Jessica,
I have the same problemMilton11/02/08
It is a large lump of scar tissue ..... Now I have had threecortisoneinjections right in the lump and I am very happy to tell you that it is finally getting smaller and less painful . I think it is a great idea you are going to see a Pod for it ...
Does anyone know the cause to a fibroma?
The first step is to find out exactly what the lump on the bottom of your foot is - get it checked. Many of such lumps are known as plantar fibromtosis and are basically akin to balls of scar tissue attached to the plantar scia. Simple excision has a high recurrence rate (when you cut out scar tissue, you get more scar tissue). Radical excision involves taking a larger section of the plantar scia out with the lump and that has a better chance of success but is also a more traumatic and more disabling procedure.

Yes, it sounds like a fibroma. no, im not a dr, but have had 6 of these things removed from the bottoms of BOTH feet, so im kind of an expert (lol) on these benign tumors... the surgeon told me they are sometimes hereditary (my ther has two of them ) and sometimes are accompanied by a stricture on the palms of the hands. they are sometimes quite long and wrapped around a tendon, as was my case. they are basically harmless if removed in a timely manner, otherwise they can cause permanent damage. they can become quite painful when walking if neglected. i also underwent injections ofsteroids directly into the lump itself with no luck in dissolving them. i hope some if this info puts your mind at ease...

Wow, I noticed a small lump just a few minutes ago and googled it. It is at the tip of my arch on the bottom of my foot---felt like a blister. Of course I thought it was cancer. Thanks Dr. Z for taking the time to write. I will check with MD soon.

Thanks Laurie, but mine doesnt really hurt. Only if I press really hard on it. I have also noticed that, it is the foot I wrap around the bottom of the leg of my putor chair. Not sure if it has anything to do with it, but its a thought.I dont know why I do this but I do. (LOL) My other foot is fine...I dont wrap that one. Did yours always hurt? How long did you have it? You mentioned scar tissue...from what? Any replies would be very helpful. Thanks

Hi; I have the exact same thing on my left foot. It seems attached to the tendon. It is not painfull. I read in a book once that you need to massage out lumps in the foot, it can take a long time. I had one in the center of the sole once & it went away, Randy

Please do not jump to conclusions that the growth may not be benign; statistically that is probably the case but an incisional biopsy would seem reasonable in my opinion.

I am a returning Veteran from Desert Storm/Shield and during my discharge physical I found a lump in the arch of my right foot. I was granted 10% disability and now unfortunately the mass has grown. Ive had it removed 2x and its comeback again, only difference is, the mass is starting to become more painful and grow in size. I informed my Case Worker and Podiatrists and theyre doing their best to provide me with relief and solution. They were going to try sclerotic agents but their is little blood flow to the foot and they refuse to do a needle biopsy to diagnose the matter because it is in a vascular area and feel that it would be inconclusive. They now found another tumor in my uterus; however, because my maternal grandmother and aunt have died from cancer, theyre now treating the tumor in my foot and uterus with extreme precision. I was born with a hemangioma or birthmark on the right side of my ce, could that have anything to do with it? If so, what is the likelihood of it becoming or turning into cancer? If I dont have another surgery to excide the mass, what are chances of cancer after 40yrs of age?
